Gemius and IAB research on the internet in Central and East Europe
In cooperation with IAB, Gemius - the European leader of online research on the internet and via the internet - has prepared a report entitled "Do you CEE? Interactive Overview of Central and Eastern Europe Markets 2009". The document is a compendium of knowledge on the online internet market for those interested in the Central and East European region.
The report was compiled based on results delivered by Gemius's flagship research services, with the most significant data obtained using gemiusAudience and gemiusTraffic. This allowed for the creation of an up-to-date picture of the internet market in thirteen CEE states, i.e. Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. In order to systematise the featured information, the report was divided into the following sections: a general overview of the internet in Central and East Europe, followed by descriptions of local markets, lists of online industry organisations operating in these countries as well as comments by local experts concerning the ongoing changes, needs and expectations of users, the latest trends and barriers encountered by the markets on their paths toward further development.
The first part of the report presents a comparison of CEE states with regard to internet penetration, online ad spends and broadband access. It demonstrates that the highest level of internet penetration is enjoyed by Estonia, where internet users account for 68% of the population over the age of 15. With a result of over 40%, Poland comes as far down the list as ninth, overtaking Croatia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. The CEE country with the largest online population is Russia, while the state with the largest percentage growth of internet users over the last three years is Ukraine.
Section two of the report comprises a selection of comprehensive, three-part reviews of the markets. The first part of each review contains a description of the main players, i.e. websites, portals, news and social networks operating on the relevant market. The popularity data concerning these sites was obtained using the gemiusAudience research service. The next part of each market analysis describes the local internet users’ characteristics – their socio-demographic profiles and online activity. Finally, the third part of each review contains data on the type of tools internet users utilise to surf the net in each of the researched countries. It also presents popularity rankings concerning browsers, operating systems, search engines and screen resolutions, based on data obtained using gemiusTraffic.
The closing sections of the report feature a list of online industry organisations operating in the aforementioned countries and the opinions of local experts. Representatives of such online businesses as Nasza-Klasa, Ipsos Media, Google or Ad.Net contribute their comments to the report, thus providing an even deeper insight into the CEE internet market in 2009 and for the forthcoming years.
The result of the cooperation between IAB and Gemius, the "Do you CEE? Interactive Overview of Central and Eastern Europe Markets 2009" report, can be downloaded from the website of the third Internet CEE conference: www.internetcee.com.
