Gemius SA presents the most popular operating systems, web browsers and search engines used by Internet visitors in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. According to gemiusTraffic research Windows XP operating system has the largest percentage share nearly 90% on the Lithuanian market.

The popularity of operating systems, web browsers and search engines is presented thanks to gemiusTraffic research. The results are gathered from millions of Internet users who visit the websites encompassed by the survey. Visitors are identified by cookie files assigned to their browser profiles. The analysis of the data enables to show the information about the most popular technical solutions chosen by Internet users.

Operating systems

According to the weekly data from 29 July 2008 to 4 August 2008 the most often used operating systems in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia belong to Windows family. Nearly 99% of national page views were done by visitors who use this kind of operating system in the states encompassed by the research. A very small percentage share in Baltic countries has Unix family (Estonia – 1.41% of national page views, Latvia – 0.93% national page views, Lithuania – 0.55% national page views).

Despite the withdrawing of Windows XP, it remains to be in wide use in Lithuania (89.72% of national page views), Latvia (86.87% national page views) and Estonia (80.35% national page views). However, within a year a decrease in Windows XP shares was marked on the markets of the Baltic countries. The largest was noticed on Estonian one – by about 9 percentage points.

Web browsers

Windows Vista has the smallest market share in Lithuania (8.25%) and the largest in Estonia (15.11%). The less popular operating system in the afore-mentioned countries is Linux. Windows Vista and Linux are enjoying greater popularity among the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian visitors this year than in 2007.

In the Baltic countries participating in the research, MSIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) is the prevailing web browser. It is the most spread in Estonia – 65.39% of market share and the least in Latvia (54.38%). However, its popularity slightly falls down taking under account the results of the previous year.

The second position in each country took Firefox. It has the largest market share in Latvia – nearly 40% and the smallest in Lithuania – about 29%. Opera seems to be the less chosen web browser, especially it is the least common in Estonia – only 2.47% of the share. 4.47% of national page views were done by Latvian and 7.65% by Lithuanian Internet users having Opera browser. The usage of Firefox and Opera web browsers among Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian visitors is growing compared to the previous year. Especially, Firefox has the largest increase in the market shares in Lithuania and Latvia, by approx. 10 percentage points within a year.

Search engines

In all of the afore-mentioned countries Google is ranked the highest and its shares on the markets continue to grow. The record number of page views were done by visitors using this kind of browser in Lithuania (98.18%) and by a bit less in Latvia (97.95% page views). In Estonia Google has only 53.37% of market share and its position of leadership seems to be undermined by the local search engine – neti.ee – which gained 43.79% of page views.

The specification of the presented popularity of operating systems, web browsers and search engines in the Baltic countries is introduced up-to-date thanks to gemiusTraffic research. Data are actualised on the weekly basis. Due to the survey the information on users’ behaviour on the websites and their usage of technical solutions can be obtained.
