Insight into the trends of Hungarian Internet at ranking.hu web site

2008-06-27

The aim of rankings.hu web site, developed by Gemius, is to give a persistent overview on the tendencies on Internet usage among Hungarian visitors. On the web site one can for example follow how popular are various operating systems, browsers, display settings and search engines.

Rankings.hu offers information on the attractiveness of the chosen technical parameters, but not only them. It provides the actual position of operating systems, browsers, used screen resolutions and color settings, search engines and web directories. Furthermore, the system creates the ranking of those Hungarian counties and foreign countries where Internet users, who visit Hungarian web sites participating in the research, are located. There is also information on the ratio of cookie-blocking – it is an important issue when it comes to creating personalized services or online advertisement. Thanks to cookies web sites owners can customize the content for their users and are able to set the capping when emitting creatives, saving our patience and their own money. Last but not least on rankings.hu there is the data on most frequently used search engines and search pages.

The service rankings.hu is based on statistics of those web sites that participate in gemiusTraffic study. gemiusTraffic, developed by Gemius SA, is a research tool designed to analyze how Internet users surf the monitored web site. At the moment there are several hundred Hungarian publishers who participate in the study and their numbers are growing. The profile of participating sites is very eclectic, one may find a national bank or a popular news portal as well among them. The methodology of gathering statistics is based on calculating cookies and page view numbers. There are over 400 thousand web sites monitored by gemiusTraffic on which users make more than 80 billion page views per month in all the countries where publishers use this site-centric tool. Further explanation of the methodology used at Rankings.hu is to be found on the web site.

Users can customize the graphs that visually represent changes in statistics. They can decide on which elements should be shown or hidden in the actual view (for example the ranking of operating systems may be narrowed to only Unix-based or Windows systems). The service is accessible in Hungarian as well as in English and there is also a weekly newsletter available. It includes a top list of categories on a week by week basis. For those who are interested in CEE trends, on the main page of rankings.hu there are links to statistics from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.
